The 1996 volume, the year the magazine's subject shifted from dial-up systems to the web, marked by the Spring editorial "Caught in the Web" and the Autumn "PHF Exploit."

Spring runs "Tap Alert," "Unshredding the Evidence," "Confessions of a Beige Boxer," "Hacking Caller ID Boxes," "The Alaskan Phone System," a Motorola cellular guide and "Avoiding Suspicion." Summer covers "Flood Warning," "Scanning Australia," "How To Create Encryption," RCONSOLE hacking, "Flightlink Fun," "Starting a Hacker Scene" and "And Justice For All." Autumn prints "Searches and Arrests," "Hacking the SCC OS," the Brazilian phone system, GTE voice prompts, "Hack Your High School," federal BBS lists, "Building the Cheese Box," "Spoofing Cellular Service" and "The Weird World of AOL." Winter adds "Toward More Secrets," "Chipcards Explained," "Craft Access Terminal," "Cracking AskSam," "Snooping Via MS-Mail," "Social Engineering Via Video" and "Defeating the W95 Screensaver."

"Starting a Hacker Scene" in the Summer issue is an early piece of organising advice. The magazine came back to it in the Summer 2008 issue with "Thirteen Years of Starting a Hacker Scene."
