The Epilogue by Laia Abril

The Epilogue

by Laia Abril
Dewi Lewis Publishing · 2014 · Hardcover
The Epilogue reconstructs the life of Cammy Robinson, a 26-year-old who died from complications of bulimia, through testimonies, family photographs, letters, medical records, and other archival ephemera gathered in close collaboration with her family. Laia Abril combines her own color photographs with these found documents, using multiple inserts and in-page gatefolds to interleave the family's private materials with her own observational images of the spaces and objects Cammy left behind. Rather than centering the disorder itself, the book follows its aftermath, the grief, guilt, and altered family dynamics of those who survive a loved one's death from an eating disorder, extending Abril's visibility to the indirect victims usually left out of the clinical narrative. The book is presented as the concluding chapter of Abril's long-running investigation into eating disorders and the visual culture surrounding them, a project she began in 2010 with earlier multimedia work addressing bulimia and pro-anorexia imagery online. The Epilogue was shortlisted for the 2014 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award and named a best photobook of the year by numerous critics.
