Sankofa · 2010 · Paperback

A practical guide to an artist's education and career, written by a painter who teaches at New York art schools.

The 244-page book covers how artists prepare for criticism, work with different instructors, build confidence and collaborate. Its 18 chapters take in developing a personal style, choosing mentors, composition and colour theory, portfolio development, and what gallery dealers look for. The author presents it as a conversation with a mentor or a successful artist. It is illustrated in colour throughout.

Samuel Adoquei is a Ghanaian-born artist who has taught at the Art Students League and the National Academy School of Fine Art in New York. His work has been shown at the Smithsonian Institution and the Harvard Club, and the French town of Pomport gave him its Medal of Honor.
