Foam Magazine #43: Freedom of Expression under Surveillance by Ai Weiwei

Foam Magazine #43: Freedom of Expression under Surveillance

by Ai Weiwei
Foam (Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam) · 2015 · Magazine, softcover
Foam Magazine #43, 'Freedom of Expression under Surveillance,' was produced in close collaboration with Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, who served as guest editor for the issue. Having lived under constant government surveillance for years, Weiwei uses the issue to turn the camera back on the watchers, presenting images from his own Instagram feed and stills from the 24-hour 'WeiWeiCam' he trained on himself. The issue is organized into four sections, 'Sousveillance,' 'Self Surveillance,' 'Urban Surveillance,' and 'Art and Surveillance,' and includes an interview with the artist alongside his own commentary. Published by Foam in Amsterdam in December 2015, it marked the magazine's first issue built entirely around a single guest editor's practice and its first dedicated feature on Ai Weiwei.
