Strip
Kathryn Andrews' Strip turns snapshots of the Hollywood Walk of Fame into a flip-book of tourists, street performers, and the traffic lights between them.
Andrews photographed Hollywood Boulevard at street level, then laid the pictures out in overlapping rows that shift left and right as the reader turns the page, mimicking the look of a film strip. The layered images never quite resolve into a single coherent scene; instead a fragmented version of the boulevard keeps reassembling itself in new combinations. Published by UCCA and Koenig Books in 2015 and edited by Karen Marta and Brian Roettinger, the book was made for "The Los Angeles Project," a 2014 exhibition at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing that asked seven Los Angeles artists to each produce an artist's book.
Strip was Andrews' first artist's book, made in the tradition of John Baldessari and Edward Ruscha's photographic studies of the Los Angeles street. It marked an early instance of the found-object and appropriation strategies that later defined her sculpture and installation work.
