Bauhaus 1919–1933: Workshops for Modernity

The catalogue of MoMA's 2009 Bauhaus exhibition, the first comprehensive survey of the school in New York since the museum's own 1938 show, edited by curators Barry Bergdoll and Leah Dickerman.

Organised with the three German Bauhaus collections in Berlin, Weimar and Dessau, the exhibition brought together some 400 works across the school's fourteen years: furniture, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, typography, photography, theatre design, architecture, painting and sculpture. The book reproduces them in 510 colour images and sets them against essays by Bergdoll and Dickerman on the school's history and pedagogy, with shorter texts by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Brigid Doherty, Hal Foster and fourteen other scholars, each devoted to a single key object. A chronology and documentary section follow.

The exhibition Bauhaus 1919–1933: Workshops for Modernity was on view at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, from 8 November 2009 to 25 January 2010. It marked the school's ninetieth anniversary. The clothbound catalogue is out of print.
