Stereosophic Conjunctions

Stereosophic Conjunctions (2016) gathers twenty-seven photographic pairings by Dutch artist Paul Bogaers, in which found snapshots, postcards, and magazine clippings collide with his own photographs into surreal, associative collisions.

Printed originally as black-and-white gelatin silver prints and reproduced here in duotone, the pairings set unrelated images — an amateur snapshot, a postcard, a torn magazine page — against each other in what Bogaers calls ‘gedachtenfotografie,’ or thought-photography: a medium built to describe the visible world turned toward picturing an inner one. The title puns on stereoscopy, echoed by the paired viewfinders on its orange cover. Published 2016 by Timmer Art Books, an imprint of Lecturis (Eindhoven), as a 48-page, cahier-stitched softcover designed by Rob van Hoesel and edited by Frank van der Stok and the artist.

Paul Bogaers (b. 1961, Tilburg) has worked since the 1980s across photography, collage, and sculptural assemblage, drawing on a growing archive of found and self-made images recombined into associative sequences rather than documentary series. Stereosophic Conjunctions isolates that collecting-and-pairing method, also central to Les Vacances de M. Rorschach, as a subject on its own.
