The Luxury of Rigor by Matt Borruso

The Luxury of Rigor

Visible Publications · 2013 · Softcover

The Luxury of Rigor (2013) is an early zine from Matt Borruso's San Francisco imprint Visible Publications, built entirely from appropriated photography run through screen-printed color and half-tone texture.

Printed in full color across 54 softcover pages in an open edition, the book cuts between glossy shelter-magazine interiors, close-up geological studies of salt and mineral crystal, a horror-film still, and the printer's own registration bars and color-swatch keys - treating the tools of commercial reproduction as material for the collage itself. The title's dry pairing of "luxury" and "rigor" frames the method: found images of aspirational excess are handled with the same deadpan, process-driven attention as the production marks that interrupt them.

Borruso has run Visible Publications since 2010, self-publishing close to twenty small-run, hand-assembled books that mine found imagery, screen printing, and appropriation. Hudson Street Library also holds his Negative Space (2010), DATA (2019), and Wax House of Wax (2016), all produced under the same imprint.
