The Age of Collage 2: Contemporary Collage in Modern Art

The second installment in Gestalten's survey of contemporary collage, this anthology gathers work by more than seventy international artists to track how a century-old cut-and-paste technique has expanded into gallery-scale assemblage and digitally assembled composition alike.

Published in 2016, the volume builds on its 2013 predecessor, moving from handmade, analog cut-and-paste toward work produced digitally, and from small-format collage toward large-scale installation and public commission. Artists represented range from established figures such as John Baldessari and Richard Prince to younger practitioners including Lola Dupre, chosen to show collage's reach across fine art, illustration, and design.

The book was edited by Dennis Busch (b. 1971), a Hamburg-based collage artist who originated the Age of Collage project with Gestalten in 2013, together with Gestalten founder Robert Klanten. Busch's own hand-cut, analog practice, built from vintage found imagery, informed the volume's curatorial eye. It is the middle title in a three-part series, preceded by the original Age of Collage (2013, edited by Busch) and followed by The Age of Collage 3 (2020, edited by Klanten and Lincoln Dexter).
