Calder by Matter
Calder by Matter collects Herbert Matter's photographs of Alexander Calder's sculptures and of Calder at work and at home.
Matter was a photographer and graphic designer and a friend of Calder, and he had close access to both the work and the life. The pictures show sculptures at different stages, Calder in his studio, and Calder with his family in Roxbury, Connecticut. Many of the sculpture photographs are published here for the first time. Éditions Cahiers d'Art issued the book in 2012 in collaboration with the Calder Foundation. Alexander S. C. Rower, Calder's grandson, edited it, with texts by Jed Perl and John Hill. The standard edition runs to 300 pages with 300 illustrations.
Cahiers d'Art also published Matter's Mobile in Motion, 1936 in 2013, a portfolio of six gelatin silver prints made from his original negative, in an edition of 50, again in collaboration with the Calder Foundation.
