If You Don't Belong, Don't Be Long

Scott Campbell's first book takes its title from a 2010 OHWOW gallery show and refuses the usual separation between the tattoo shop and the gallery, treating both as one continuous body of work.

Published by Rizzoli with the gallery and imprint OHWOW, the volume gathers tattoos alongside the objects Campbell makes from them: dollar bills lasered into lace-like lattices and cursive phrases, drawings, burnt tortillas, granite tombstones, enamel holograms and graphite on ostrich eggshells, including work that came out of a visit to Mexico's Santa Marta prison, where he tattooed inmates. The book is built as a physical object in its own right, with an embossed flock cover and sections divided by black-and-white flash and transfer sheets printed on tracing paper against high-gloss color plates. Forewords come from the novelist Richard Price, OHWOW's Al Moran and Justin Theroux, with photography by Terry Richardson.

Campbell, born in Louisiana and based in Brooklyn, runs the Williamsburg studio Saved Tattoo and draws on nineteenth-century hand-lettering, kitsch and classic American flash. He carries that vocabulary intact into sculpture and works on paper. His tattoo clients have included Heath Ledger and Marc Jacobs.
