New Sculpture by John Chamberlain

New Sculpture

by John Chamberlain
Gagosian · 2012

John Chamberlain: New Sculpture was published with Gagosian's 2011 exhibitions of the sculptor's newest work in New York and London, and carries a text by the art historian Thomas Crow.

Gagosian and Rizzoli published the 144-page hardcover in February 2012. The New York show ran at 555 West 24th Street from May 5 to July 8, 2011, with a concurrent presentation at the gallery's Britannia Street space in London, and it announced Gagosian's worldwide representation of Chamberlain. The new sculptures were made from metal taken from midcentury American and European cars. The New York checklist includes AWESOMEMEATLOAF, TAMBOURINEFRAPPE and SUPERJUKE, all in painted and chrome-plated steel. Crow is the Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.

Chamberlain began making sculpture from discarded automobile-body parts and other industrial scrap in the late 1950s. He crumples, crushes, bends, twists, paints and welds the metal, and leaves the original seams and the marks of his handling visible. His work was in The Art of Assemblage at the Museum of Modern Art in 1961, alongside Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso, and Rizzoli's biography note counts more than one hundred solo exhibitions worldwide.
