Everything She Touched: The Life of Ruth Asawa
Marilyn Chase's biography of the sculptor Ruth Asawa. It begins on a California farm and ends with the hanging wire sculptures she is known for.
Asawa was a farmer's daughter who was held in a Japanese American internment camp during the Second World War. Later she raised six children in a multiracial family, founded an arts-focused high school and made public fountains in San Francisco. The book carries more than 60 reproductions of artwork and archival photographs, among them portraits by Imogen Cunningham. Chronicle Books published it in April 2020.
Asawa's sculpture is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Getty, the Whitney Museum and other institutions. The book covers the family and civic commitments that ran alongside her studio work.
