Woman With a Camera (35mm)
Woman With a Camera (35mm) is a 2009 artist's book by Anne Collier, published by the New York imprint Hassla Books, built from a sequence of found and appropriated photographs.
Each image in the book shows a woman photographed in the act of photographing: a 35mm camera raised to her eye, her own gaze hidden behind the viewfinder. Drawn from vernacular and commercial sources rather than shot by Collier herself, the sequence turns a single, repeated gesture into a study of who gets to hold the camera and who is pictured holding it, folding the photographer's own instrument back into the frame as its subject.
The book sits within a body of work in which Collier has repeatedly rephotographed and recontextualized found imagery of cameras, eyes, and other tools of looking, including related bodies of work such as Women With Cameras (Anonymous) and Women With Cameras (Self-Portrait) and her exhibited series Anne Collier: Photographic, in which the mechanics and history of photography itself become her recurring subject.
