Coming of Age
Coming of Age is Petra Collins's first monograph, a retrospective survey of the photography that made her one of the defining image-makers of the 2010s.
The book collects a decade of Collins's work, from early self-portraits taken as a teenager in Toronto through campaigns for Gucci and Adidas, films for the Tate, and editorials for magazines including Vogue and i-D. Personal essays and Polaroids run alongside the plates, along with contributions from women who shaped her thinking about image-making, including Marilyn Minter, Alessandro Michele, Karley Sciortino, and Jamia Wilson. Laurie Simmons writes the introduction. Rizzoli published the 208-page hardcover in 2017.
Collins, born in Toronto in 1992, began photographing at fifteen and served as a resident photographer for Rookie magazine before her pastel-toned, unretouched pictures of girlhood and adolescence became a visual reference point copied widely across fashion and social media. She also edited Babe, an anthology of work by women photographers, and has since directed music videos for Selena Gomez, Carly Rae Jepsen, Olivia Rodrigo, and Cardi B.
