Fire In Cairo
Fire in Cairo is Matthew Connors's fragmentary photographic account of the political upheaval that followed Egypt's 2011 revolution, published by SPBH Editions in 2015.
The 130-page hardcover interleaves reportage shot on Cairo's streets and squares, still marked by the residue of protest, with portraits of Egyptians from across the political spectrum and passages of Connors's own experimental fiction. Rather than build a linear account of the revolution, the book moves between documentary observation, poetry, and surrealism, treating the city as a stage where the country's unresolved conflicts kept replaying.
Connors teaches photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Fire in Cairo grew out of extended reporting trips to Egypt and stands as his most sustained engagement with a single unfolding political event.
