Painted Time: (2020–2024)

A survey catalogue of five years of Ann Craven's serial painting (the moons, birds, trees, and flowers she calls her "icons"), published for her 2025 exhibition at Maine's Farnsworth Art Museum.

Published on the occasion of Ann Craven: Painted Time (2020–2024), curated by Jaime DeSimone in collaboration with the artist (Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine, May 3, 2025 – January 4, 2026), the catalogue traces a practice in which repetition becomes a way of capturing time: moons painted from observation on successive nights, birds and flowers returned to again and again, each canvas dated and archived. Across 128 pages it pairs a contribution from Farnsworth director Christopher J. Brownawell with a new essay by Anne Collins Goodyear, co-director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, and a conversation between DeSimone and Craven.

Craven, who divides her time between New York and Cushing, Maine, has built three decades of formally innovative, conceptually loaded work on seriality and memory, including the Time stripe paintings made from the palettes of her finished canvases. She is represented by Karma, New York; a companion presentation, Painted Time: Moons (Laboratory), was mounted at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in 2025.
