Format
Format is the first widely distributed book by the American painter Sarah Crowner, published by Primary Information in October 2012.
Primary Information is a nonprofit press devoted to artists' books and reprints of experimental and conceptual publishing, and Format was Crowner's introduction to that list; she returned to the press for a second project, Patterns, in 2018. This copy is signed and inscribed by the artist.
Crowner, born in Philadelphia in 1974 and based in Brooklyn, is best known for geometric abstract paintings built by sewing together separately painted pieces of canvas and linen, a hard-edge style with roots in 1950s and '60s abstraction. She holds a BA from UC Santa Cruz and an MFA from Hunter College, and has shown at venues including the Walker Art Center and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery.
