Fashion Climbing: A Memoir with Photographs
The memoir of the New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, found in typescript after his death and published by Penguin Press in September 2018.
His niece came upon the manuscript among his papers and photographs. It follows him from a Boston childhood in which his family disapproved of his interest in fashion, through his career as a hat designer under the name William J., to his military service in France and his decades photographing style on New York streets. Hilton Als, a friend, supplies the preface, and the book is illustrated with photographs of Cunningham himself.
Cunningham (died 2016) became known for his Times columns on street fashion and society events. The memoir covers his life through the 1960s, per Booklist, which is the period before that photographic work made him widely known.
