Odysseia
A record of migrant journeys into Europe by the Magnum photographer Antoine d'Agata, combining photographs, stills from video and texts, published by André Frère Éditions in 2013.
D'Agata followed migrants in Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary, treating each route as a personal odyssey. The book carries texts by Bruno Le Dantec and Rafael Garido, words from the migrants themselves, and a text by the three authors based on statistics about European immigration. François Cheval, quoted by the publisher, notes that there is no linear story: the pictures stay with the basics of walking, eating, keeping warm and sleeping. Hardcover, 192 pages, in French.
D'Agata was born in Marseille in 1961 and left France in 1983. D'Agata studied at the International Center of Photography in New York under Larry Clark and Nan Goldin, won the Niépce Prize in 2001, and became a full member of Magnum Photos in 2008. The work returns to addiction, sex and darkness, often drawing on the photographer's own life.
