Cliff's Notes for Catcher in the Rye by Richard Prince
Eric Doeringer's study guide to Richard Prince's The Catcher in the Rye, made up as a Cliff's Notes booklet with "Prince" printed where Salinger's name would be.
In 2011 Prince issued an almost exact facsimile of the first edition of J.D. Salinger's novel, changing only the author's name, the retail price and the imprint, and sold shrink-wrapped copies at Central Park. Doeringer's Notes treat that book as Prince's own novel. They supply chapter summaries and commentaries, character sketches and study questions, and repeat the Cliff's Notes warning that a study guide is no substitute for the text. The cover copies the yellow-and-black striped Cliff's Notes design down to the Lincoln, Nebraska imprint. The booklet is photocopied in black and white and stapled, 58 pages, published by Copycat Publications in New York in 2018.
Doeringer (b. 1974) sells "bootleg" copies of other artists' work and reissues artists' books under his Copycat Publications imprint. The library also holds his 121 Nurses (2023), built from the paperbacks behind Prince's Nurse Paintings, and Records (2011), his remake of Ed Ruscha's 1971 book.
