Co-Machines: Mobile Disruptive Architecture
A collection of projects and essays on architects and designers who leave office practice to build mobile, self-initiated interventions in the city.
The book maps a movement organized around place-making, occupying and squatting, and alternative economies. Its interventions are ecological or technological in scope, all of them mobile, and nearly all were made without permission from city planners. It presents international projects by emerging designers. It asks what architectural permanence is for. It also asks which social, ecological and ethical questions urban planning leaves out. Essays by Mimi Zeiger, Kim Dovey, Alan Smart, Nick Green, Fiona Shipwright and Michael Maginness sit alongside the projects. Featured practitioners include Melissa Jin, Ahmad S Khouja, Kaegh Allen, Edwina Portocarrero and Office of Urban Play.
The cover credits Dan Dorocic and ON/OFF, and Onomatopee lists Dorocic as editor. It is number 171 in the Eindhoven publisher's list, a 232-page sewn and glued softcover with a black cover illustrated by Mike Ellis.
