Pictures of People Taking Pictures

by Cheryl Dunn
Heavy Time · 2015 · Softcover

Pictures of People Taking Pictures is Cheryl Dunn's argument that the compulsion to photograph everything did not start with the iPhone, built from her own pictures of other people mid-shot.

Dunn, a street photographer and documentary filmmaker who has spent decades working New York's streets, gathers photographers caught in the act across different eras and settings; changes in wardrobe and, more tellingly, in the cameras being used, from press bodies to point-and-shoots to phones, run through the book as a rough timeline. Heavy Time, the Melbourne imprint run by Rob Cordiner, Ed Davis, and Todd Jordan, published the book in 2015 in an edition of 100.

Dunn is best known for the photo books Bicycle Gangs of New York (2005) and Some Kinda Vocation (2007), and for directing the documentary Everybody Street (2013), which profiles a generation of New York street photographers including Martha Cooper and Jill Freedman.
