Marcel Dzama: Sower of Discord

Sower of Discord is the book that gathers fifteen years of Marcel Dzama's output in one place, and it is assembled less like an art-historical survey than like a company of the artist's own collaborators.

Published by Abrams in November 2013, the 288-page volume carries more than five hundred colour images covering work from the late 1990s to the early 2010s: the root-beer-tinted ink drawings, the dioramas, the polka-dotted and bat-headed figures, the sculptures and the films. Raymond Pettibon contributes the foreword, Dave Eggers three short stories written in response to the drawings, the art historian Bradley Bailey a critical essay, and Spike Jonze an interview with the artist. The mix is deliberate, treating Dzama's work as something that has circulated through music videos, album art and theatre as readily as through galleries.

Dzama (b. 1974, Winnipeg) emerged from the Royal Art Lodge collective in Manitoba and now works in New York. His other publications include The Berlin Years with McSweeney's, Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets with David Zwirner and Hatje Cantz, and The Book of Ballet, made around his collaboration with the choreographer Justin Peck.
