Selected Collages by Thomas Eggerer

Selected Collages

by Thomas Eggerer
Inpatient Press · 2022 · Softcover

Published on the occasion of Thomas Eggerer's 2022 survey at 15 Orient, Selected Collages, 2002 to 2022 gathers two decades of the collage practice that runs beneath the painter's better-known canvases, where his figures in public space first take shape.

The softcover volume, produced with Brooklyn's Inpatient Press, reproduces collages built from Eggerer's archive of found printed matter: high-gloss 1980s university yearbooks, illustrated fitness manuals, self-help guides, nature books, and a favored 1982 Italian volume on the Milan subway. Cut-out photographs, he writes, rest in a box "until I feel more interested in them, which can sometimes take years" the source has to be "almost normal, not too sensational." An essay by art historian David Joselit accompanies the plates across 90 pages. The exhibition ran at 15 Orient, Brooklyn, from September 7 to October 8, 2022.

Eggerer (b. 1963, Munich) trained as a painter at the Art Academy in Munich and moved to New York in 1994, where he joined the collective Group Material. Represented by Petzel Gallery and Galerie Buchholz, he has exhibited at the Frans Hals Museum, Kunstverein Braunschweig, and the Wadsworth Atheneum, and his work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, SFMOMA, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
