Drawings by Judith Eisler
Drawings by Judith Eisler is a small book of drawings in a series that reaches back nearly two decades and includes early drawings made from photographs.
Dashwood Books published it in July 2018 as a 72-page softcover in an edition of 500 copies, designed by Joseph Logan. Dashwood says the early drawings reflect her preoccupation with light, mediation and psychological tension. Its notice for the book also mentions her Casey Kaplan show in New York, a new series of paintings based on Derek Jarman's 1986 film Caravaggio.
Eisler builds her paintings and drawings from her own photographs of paused film scenes. Each image passes through several layers of mediation, and the renderings move between representation and abstraction. She was born in 1962, earned a BFA at Cornell University in 1984, received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002, and lives and works in Vienna and Warren, Connecticut. A monograph, Center of the Frame, appeared in Milan in 2024.
