In the Studio: Paintings/Photographs
In the Studio: Paintings/Photographs is a two-volume exhibition catalogue examining how painters and photographers have depicted the artist's own workplace, from the sixteenth century to the late twentieth.
The Paintings volume, with an essay and catalogue entries by John Elderfield, brings together more than fifty paintings and works on paper by nearly forty artists spanning four centuries. The companion Photographs volume, organized by Peter Galassi, traces photography's own engagement with the studio as subject. Gagosian published the slipcased two-volume set with Phaidon in 2015 to accompany simultaneous exhibitions, one of paintings and one of photographs, held at Gagosian's New York galleries from February 17 to April 18, 2015. The set was designed by Goto Design and printed by Shapco Printing.
Elderfield is Chief Curator Emeritus of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, where he organized retrospectives of Henri Matisse and Willem de Kooning among others. Galassi spent three decades at MoMA, twenty of them as Chief Curator of Photography, mounting exhibitions on Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander and Andreas Gursky. Their pairing of volumes treats the studio not as a single tradition but as a subject each medium has returned to on its own terms.
