Problems with Decomposition

by Sam Falls
Morel

Problems with Decomposition is a book of Sam Falls's photographs that sets organic matter against car tires, with paint stamped onto the printed images.

Morel published it as a color softcover of 60 pages in a limited edition of 1,000 copies, with a five-color screen-printed cover tip-in. The publisher places the series among Falls's concerns with color, perception, digital imagery and natural processes, and adds time as a further subject. It describes the pictures as moving between the photograph and the imprint of the thing photographed, made by stamping paint onto the print.

Falls was born in San Diego in 1984 and holds a BA from Reed College and an MFA from ICP-Bard. He is best known for large canvases made outdoors with water-reactive dry pigment and plant life, in which sun, rain and wind take part in the making. His work is in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, MOCA Los Angeles and LACMA, among others.
