A visual essay by the French photographer Benoît Fougeirol on eleven "Zones urbaines sensibles", the administratively defined poor districts on the edges of Paris, published by X Artists' Books in 2017.
For each district Fougeirol assembles photographs, maps and diagrams, and place names. No single one of them gives the full picture. The districts are read through their buildings, their materials, patterns and surfaces, and the book builds up cumulatively. A text by Jean-Christophe Bailly reflects on how the districts are lived. Designed by Jérôme Saint-Loubert Bié, in English and French, 375 pages, softcover in a screenprinted transparent vinyl jacket. It won the 2018 ADAGP Revelation Artist's Book prize and the 2019 Fedrigoni Top Award.
Fougeirol was born in 1962 and lives and works in and around Paris. The work tests how far images of a place drift from the experience of living there. The project Point de rupture was acquired by the Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, in July 2024.
