antiDATA: la désobéissance numérique. Art et hacktivisme technocritique
A French-language study of artists, hackers and activists who answer the power of digital platforms with acts of disobedience.
Les presses du réel published the 232-page paperback in November 2020 in its Perceptions collection, with 51 colour illustrations. Fourmentraux examines resistance to the dominance of technological innovation through counter-surveillance, tactical media, speculative design and data visualization. Trevor Paglen, Paolo Cirio and Julien Prévieux are among the artists discussed. The book argues that these practices challenge the sovereignty of platforms while writing the histories of code and cryptography into cultural critique.
Fourmentraux holds a doctorate in socio-anthropology and is a professor at Aix-Marseille University. He is an art critic affiliated with AICA and a member of the Centre Norbert Elias. His earlier books on digital culture include Art et Internet (2005) and L'Ère post-média (2012).
