Jonah Freeman & Justin Lowe: Black Acid Co-op / Bright White Underground / Stray Light Grey / Artichoke Underground

by Jonah Freeman
Glenn Horowitz Bookseller · 2015 · Clothbound

This inaugural monograph documents the collaborative practice of Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, whose mazelike, fully built installations turn gallery interiors into fictional worlds assembled from found objects and invented products.

The book surveys four major works: Black Acid Co-op, Bright White Underground, Stray Light Grey and Artichoke Underground. It presents them through photographs by Todd Eberle, Greg Kessler and Joshua White alongside texts by Glenn O'Brien, Jan Tumlir, Mark Flood and Hamilton Morris and interviews with Ali Subotnick and Gianni Jetzer. Published by Glenn Horowitz Bookseller in 2015, it runs 224 pages in a clothbound edition with 232 color and 32 black and white plates, edited by Lauren Miller Walsh.

Freeman (born 1975) and Lowe (born 1976) have collaborated since 2007 on installations that read as abandoned outposts of imagined subcultures: drug labs, communes, backrooms built with the density of film sets and photographed as though documenting a real place. The book is their first sustained document of a decade spent building these immersive, narrative-driven environments.
