by Maria Luisa Frisa
Flash Art · 2020 · Magazine

The first issue of Dune, subtitled Writings on Fashion, Design and Visual Culture, takes the club dark room as its theme, with a cover by Bruce LaBruce.

Flash Art published the 160-page bilingual issue in 2020 under the direction of Maria Luisa Frisa. It opens with an introduction by Flash Art's publishers Gea Politi and Cristiano Seganfreddo and an editorial by Frisa. Judith Clark writes on the dark room as a paradigm of exhibition space. Elda Danese covers the emotions of darkness and Bruce LaBruce desire in the dark. Further essays take up cruising and the bodily borders of clubbing. Graphic design is by Think Work Observe.

Dune grew out of the working group of the fashion degree courses at Iuav University of Venice, whose research interests and writing methods it presents alongside essays by international scholars. Each issue carries a key theme.
