MACK · 2016

Hibi collects black-and-white photographs of road surfaces by Masahisa Fukase, each drawn over in coloured ink, made for a solo exhibition in Tokyo in 1992.

Fukase photographed the asphalt underfoot, with its eroded road markings and fading lines and arrows. For the exhibition Private Scenes '92 at Nikon Salon he laid bromide prints under fluid drawings in bright inks, so that his hand shows on every image. MACK published the book in April 2016 as a 240-page paperback with 111 colour plates, multiple gate-folds and a dust jacket.

Fukase was born in Bifuka, Hokkaido, in 1934, graduated from the photography department of Nihon University College of Art in 1956 and worked as a freelance photographer from 1968. His major books include Yugi (Homo Ludence) (1971), Yoko (1978) and Karasu (Ravens) (1986). A fall in 1992 left him with permanent brain damage. He died in 2012.
