Malls Across America
Malls Across America collects the photographs Michael Galinsky made in American shopping malls in 1989, published by Steidl in 2013.
In the winter of 1989 Galinsky, then twenty, began driving across the country, starting at the Smith Haven Mall on Long Island. He photographed malls from North Carolina to South Dakota and Washington State. The pictures show harried families, playful teenagers, misfits and older shoppers moving through the buildings. The book is a 144-page hardcover, 25 by 32 cm, and Steidl lists it as out of print.
Steidl places the photographs at the moment when the retail excess of the 1980s was giving way to slacker and grunge culture. In 2013 The New Republic wrote that they document a country that had yet to turn against the mall.
