Theaster Gates Black Chapel
"Black Chapel" is the catalogue for Theaster Gates's exhibition of the same name at Haus der Kunst, Munich, on view from October 25, 2019 through August 16, 2020.
Edited by Anna Schneider with contributions from Gates and five other authors, the book runs 175 pages plus a separate 19-page booklet, illustrated throughout in color, with text in English and German. It was published by Walther König, Köln, in 2021.
Gates's practice centers on the custodianship and critical redeployment of culturally significant Black objects, archives, and spaces. The Munich exhibition's title anticipates "Black Chapel," the wood-clad rotunda he later designed as the 2022 Serpentine Pavilion in London. That later project was published as a separate, distinct catalogue.
