DER SPIEGEL – Hamburg Dovenfleet

The companion volume to Der Spiegel – Hamburg Brandstwiete, turning the same dispassionate documentary eye on the second Hamburg tower the magazine occupied before its 2011 move.

The Dovenfleet tower was built in 1967 to a design by Werner Kallmorgen and first housed the German operations of IBM for nearly three decades before Der Spiegel relocated its staff there in 1995, remaining until 2011. Andreas Gehrke's photographs move through the vacated newsroom floors, stairwells, and service areas, treating the building as a layered record of two very different postwar institutions rather than as a single subject. Published by Drittel Books as a numbered edition of 300 alongside its Brandstwiete companion, with a foreword by Christine Dissmann and design by Katrin Oeding, the two volumes are sold and cataloged together as a single two-part publication.

Gehrke, who founded Drittel Books in Berlin, has repeatedly returned to buildings caught between uses: the empty lots and unclaimed edges of Berlin, the flat postwar terrain of Brandenburg, and, in this trilogy, the corporate headquarters of Der Spiegel, IBM, and the mail-order firm Quelle. Der Spiegel – Hamburg Dovenfleet completes the pairing begun with the Brandstwiete volume within that larger project.
