Photourist
Photourist collects Andy Gershon's photographs of tourists and museumgoers photographing what is in front of them, each picture built around the glowing rectangle of a phone screen held between the viewer and the view.
Working in the vein of Thomas Struth's Museum Photographs but with a phone screen instead of a crowd as the subject, Gershon frames tourist attractions and artworks so they are visible only in fragments around or through the device a visitor is using to record them, adding his own camera as a third party to the exchange between viewer and object. The self-published book, credited to Gershon's imprint Daniel 13, gathers images shot at museums and monuments; a related body of the work was shown as a group exhibition at Weinberger Gallery in Kansas City in May 2015.
Gershon, a former music-industry executive who signed artists including Moby and The White Stripes before turning to photography, is based in New York.
