Surveillance Index: Edition One
Surveillance Index: Edition One is a printed reference to one hundred books on surveillance photography, assembled by the collector Mark Ghuneim from his own library.
Each book is indexed by year, title, photographer, description, size and code, with a representative spread and a short text for every entry. It includes a poster showing all of the books and comes in a black tote bag. An essay by Carlo McCormick, "The Eyes Have It", covers the history of surveillance and its precedents in art. The printed index accompanies an online version at surveillanceindex.com. In January 2018 the Paris photography space Le Bal opened its Performing Books programme with the collection, showing more than 200 titles from it.
Ghuneim describes himself on the project site as an internet entrepreneur who began collecting books by artists and photographers about watchers and the watched in 2009. Le Bal's programme notes say he catalogued New York's street CCTV cameras with the ACLU in the early 1990s. A second edition of 111 further books was curated in 2017 and is to be added to the site.
