Bücherwald

Bücherwald ("book forest") is a small illustrated zine by the Zurich artist Ingo Giezendanner, published under his GRRRR alias, that turns a page of dense pen-and-ink drawing into a literal thicket of books and branches.

Issued by the Zurich art-book publisher Nieves in a softcover pocket format, the zine continues the hand-drawn, black-and-white style Giezendanner has used since the late 1990s to document cities and invented landscapes in obsessive linear detail. It sits within a long run of self-published GRRRR zines and artist's books that Nieves has issued alongside his murals and installations.

Giezendanner (born 1975, Zurich) is a member of the Kroesos Foundation collective and has documented the urban environments of places he has lived and travelled, from Zurich to New York, New Orleans, Cairo, Nairobi, Karachi and Colombo, in ink on paper and in large-scale wall paintings. Bücherwald is a compact example of the same practice turned toward an invented, book-filled woodland.
