Folding Space / Pressing Time

Folding Space / Pressing Time sets two artists' responses to the same flood of online imagery side by side, one working in paint and one in photography.

Dan Gluibizzi's contribution reworks grids of images gathered from Tumblr into loose, warm watercolors of the human form, drawn from amateur and selfie-sourced photographs. Zefrey Throwell's photographs give physical form to recurring dreams of time travel, with the same erotic disorientation running through Gluibizzi's paintings. Published by Ampersand in Portland in 2012 in a softcover edition of 200 copies, the book accompanied the gallery's two-artist exhibition There Is No Finish Line, standing as a conceptual counterpart to the show rather than a catalogue of it.

Gluibizzi, an MFA graduate of the University of Cincinnati based in Portland, has shown at Ampersand and in group shows at Compound Gallery and Froelick Gallery; his illustration work has appeared in the New York Times and Vogue. Throwell, based in New York, works across video, painting and performance and has shown solo at the Leopold Hoesch Museum. Folding Space / Pressing Time is one of two books Ampersand produced around Gluibizzi's work, alongside his earlier solo title Our Time.
