Who Do You Love: Twelve Reproductions

Who Do You Love presents twelve unique pieces John Gossage made through the 1990s and set aside for two decades, work he calls "photographic distractions" that refuse to sit squarely in either photography or collage.

Each gelatin silver print is combined with color elements, tissue paper and handmade marks on backing board, breaking the usual photographic illusion of a window onto another place and time and returning attention to the surface of the object itself. Fraenkel Gallery published this catalogue of the 2014 exhibition in a small hardcover of 32 pages, bound in kraft board with a paper title label, and including an interview with the artist.

Gossage (born 1946) has spent a five-decade career photographing overlooked and marginal American and European landscapes, in books including The Pond and Berlin in the Time of the Wall. Who Do You Love shows a private, more experimental side of that practice, made concurrently with his straight photographic work but not exhibited until years later.
