Uneasy Listening: Notes on Hearing and Being Heard
A short dialogue between a psychoanalyst and a violin maker on what it means to listen and to be heard.
Anouchka Grose and Robert Brewer Young begin as strangers. Their exchange draws on psychoanalytic theory, philosophy and contemporary culture, with each interrupting and unsettling the other as they try to say what listening means. MACK published the paperback, which has a flap and 96 pages, in June 2022 as part of DISCOURSE, a series of small books in which a writer, theorist or artist enters an extended dialogue with a theme, an idea or another person.
Grose is a psychoanalyst and writer practicing in London and the author of two novels and six non-fiction books. Young trained as a luthier in the artists’ studios of Carnegie Hall in New York, lectures in philosophy at the European Graduate School and heads the Scientific Research Department at J&A Beare, London.
