GAAG: The Guerrilla Art Action Group, 1969–1976: A Selection
This is the primary printed record of the Guerrilla Art Action Group, an activist artists' collective that worked from 1969 to 1976, reprinted in 2011 from the 1978 original.
The 368-page volume gathers manifestos, letters and press communiqués that the group sent to political and cultural figures. It adds facsimile documents, handwritten expense records and photographs by Ka Kwong Hui, Joanne Stamerra and others, covering 52 actions. GAAG formed in October 1969. Its members held that profit and private interest had corrupted art and culture, and they responded with symbolic, nonviolent provocation. Printed Matter first published the book in 1978. The 2011 reprint is a joint edition of Printed Matter, Kunstverein Publishing and the Research Centre for Artists' Publications at the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art.
The group's members were Jon Hendricks, Poppy Johnson, Silvianna, Joanne Stamerra, Virginia Toche and Jean Toche. The reprint credits Toche and Hendricks with Johnson, and lists Pat Steir and Paula Greif as designers and Jan van Raay as photographer.
