Four Works by David Hammons
Four Works by David Hammons is an artist zine issued in a numbered edition of eight, built around a laid-in original C-print of Hammons' Lady With Bones.
Published in Jamaica, New York by BlackMass Publishing, the twelve-page, unbound booklet reproduces four works by Hammons alongside the single unique photographic print tipped into each copy, so no two copies of the edition are identical. This second edition was edited by Kwamé Sorrell.
BlackMass was founded in 2018 by Yusuf Hassan, taking its name from Amiri Baraka's 1966 play A Black Mass. The imprint's first release, Project BlackMass, gathered contributions from Arthur Jafa, Devin B. Johnson, Jacob Mason-Macklin, Frida Orupabo, and Sorrell, and Hassan and Sorrell have continued to publish zines together and separately since. Hammons, a MacArthur Fellow known for turning discarded and overlooked materials into charged, often confrontational objects, is an unusual and significant subject for this small-press, hand-assembled format.
