June
June is another installment in Ren Hang's self-published, month-by-month photobook project, the Beijing photographer's plan in 2016 to print and issue one book for every month of the year.
The cover spells the title letter by letter across pages of dense green sea foam and rock, paired inside with a small set of photographs made in Los Angeles that month; Ren Hang described the series as "all about survival and love." It was issued as a softcover of 32 pages in an edition of 100 copies, self-produced outside the conventional publishing system.
Ren Hang (1986–2017) was a self-taught photographer and poet whose direct treatment of the nude body made him one of the most closely watched, and in China most censored, photographers of his generation. The monthly series that includes June records the fast, prolific, self-published working method that defined his short career, running alongside more widely distributed monographs such as the Taschen retrospective.
