Art Lessons: Meditations on the Creative Life by Deborah J. Haynes

Art Lessons: Meditations on the Creative Life

by Deborah J. Haynes
Westview Press · 2003 · Paperback

A book of short meditations on what it means to live as an artist, written in the tradition of Robert Henri's The Art Spirit.

Haynes addresses the mind, body and spirit of the working artist and draws on personal reflection about what it takes to make art and feel creatively and spiritually fulfilled. The lessons run from plain advice, such as keeping a pencil or crayon always to hand, to larger questions about connecting art to daily life and to the earth. Westview Press published it in Boulder in 2003 as an Icon edition, with a bibliography (pp. 185-196) and an index.

Haynes had published two academic books with Cambridge University Press before this one, which she describes as her first step toward a more personal voice. The book later went out of print. She has said it forms the core of her seventh book, Beginning Again: Reflections on Art as Spiritual Practice.
