Entangled Realities: Living with Artificial Intelligence / Leben mit künstlicher Intelligenz
The catalogue of a 2019 HeK Basel exhibition on how artificial intelligence shapes the world it claims to describe.
The 224-page volume pairs works by artists including James Bridle, Mario Klingemann, Trevor Paglen and Lauren McCarthy with theoretical texts. Felix Stalder writes on the opacity of machine-learning systems. Matteo Pasquinelli traces the history of the algorithm from ancient Indian rituals to the present. Nora N. Khan contributes a dialogue on machine violence. The editors' own essays document the curatorial process and set out the scientific and artistic context of the show.
Sabine Himmelsbach and Boris Magrini edited the book for HeK. The exhibition treated AI as an immature technology that already fires the public imagination, as virtual reality did in the 1990s. Pasquinelli's contribution links the book to his later The Eye of the Master.
