Dignity by Christian Holstad

Dignity

by Christian Holstad
Snoeck · 2004 · Softcover

An artist's book by the American artist Christian Holstad, Dignity was published by Snoeck of Cologne in 2004 in a limited edition of 1,000 copies.

The book draws on Holstad's alterations of found newsprint: its cover sets the title in ornate lettering over a collage of newspaper obituary columns, framed by a stitched, doily-like border and overlaid with a flocked gold tree — mourning ornamented into something domestic and handmade. The softcover volume documents the body of collaged and embellished works surrounding this practice.

Holstad (b. 1972) works across collage, textile, performance, and his signature eraser drawings, salvaging the printed ephemera of American life into tender, queer reworkings he is represented by Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York. The library also holds his related material in the Collage collection.
