Affect Me: Social Media Images in Art
A catalogue on how artists use images taken from social media, and on how those images move people and carry emotion.
The book accompanies the exhibition at KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation in Düsseldorf, shown 11 November 2017 to 10 March 2018. It presents artists who work with social media imagery, often of political events, and treats that imagery as sitting between factual reporting and construction. Its premise is that such images help form communities and circulate emotional affects. The participating artists are Lara Baladi, Irene Chabr, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Thomas Hirschhorn, Randa Maroufi, Rabih Mroué, Thomas Ruff and D. H. Saur. Text is in German and English, in a thread-sewn hardcover designed by Krispin Heé and Studio Daniel Rother.
The editors, Julia Höner and Kerstin Schankweiler, curated the show. The project is associated with project B01 of the CRC 1171 Affective Societies research centre at Freie Universität Berlin. Spector Books published it in Leipzig in November 2017.
