Other People
David Horvitz's Other People is a book of strangers' photographs that facial recognition software mistook for the artist.
Horvitz searched the web with pictures of his own face and collected the mismatches, photographs of other people that artificial intelligence identified as him. The project raises questions about image databases, which are often monetized without the knowledge or consent of the people pictured in them. It draws on research into the training materials used by East German border guards at Checkpoint Charlie, held in the collection of the Wende Museum. The softcover pocket book runs to 448 pages and measures 12.5 × 8.8 cm. This special edition of 50 is signed and numbered and comes with a lambda print, 8.8 × 12.5 cm, of four photographs generated by artificial intelligence.
Horvitz is an American artist who works in photography, books and text. Here the search is a biometric one, and the archive it returns is made of people who are not him.
